Although, Meijis overall operating income grew 9.1% to $81.4m (JPY 6.4bn) in Q1 thanks to its performance in its largest business area, dairy, operating income in its second largest segment, confectionery, nosedived 113%.
Meiji is Japans second largest confectioner behind South Korean firm Lotte, according to sales data from Euromonitor International, which puts the Japanese firm in the top 15 confectionery companies worldwide in term of retail value sales.
